    SPECTRAL ANALYSIS
    Each component within a generator drivetrain has a specific contribution to the magnetic field between the rotor and stator. Any slight imperfection, within any drivetrain component, can be detected when analyzing the magnetic flux (or stator current) in high resolution.

    As an example, a defect in the rotor bar of an induction generator causes the modulation of the stator current. The impact of broken rotor bars to the stator current can be determined by analysis in the frequency domain - this approach to detect rotor bar failures can be seen in a Current Signature Analysis (CSA). Rotor faults can result in excess heat, decreased efficiency, reduced insulation life, and iron core damage. Early detection of incipient faults and appropriate maintenance can avoid more severe failures.

    Defects within the gearbox can also cause signficant reliability problems. Historically gear defects within a wind turbine gearbox have been difficult to diagnose at an early enough stage to prevent costly repairs and unplanned shutdowns. Most wind turbine gearboxes have several stages each of which produces specific gear mesh frequencies. Provided the measurement system has sufficient dynamic range, these gearmesh frequencies, including their modulated sidebands, can be easily detected in a frequency spectrum well in advance of actual failure.

    Continuous monitoring of spectral components is a key element to an effective preventative maintenance program and in reducing O&M costs.
